General Information and Responsibilities

Qualifications: One must be a member of Faith United Church to serve as an officer of the church or as a member of its boards and committees.

Moderator: The Moderator presides at all meetings of the congregation, the Church Council and the Executive Committee.

Vice Moderator: The Vice Moderator assumes all of the duties of the Moderator in his or her absence.  The Vice Moderator also chairs the Pastor/Parish Relations Committee.

Clerk: The Clerk keeps a faithful record of all proceedings of the Church Council and meetings of the congregation.

Treasurer: The Treasurer receives, holds, and disburses all church money under the direction of the Board of Trustees and keeps appropriate records of the accounts.

Assistant Treasurer: The Assistant Treasurer assumes the duties of the Treasurer in his or her absence.

Treasurer of Endowments: The Treasurer of Endowments receives and allocates the income received from investments, along with keeping accurate records of the management, activity and administration of the Endowment Funds of the church, under the direction of the Board of Trustees of Endowment Funds.

Assistant Treasurer of Endowments: The Assistant Treasurer of Endowments assumes the duties of the Treasurer of Endowments in his or her absence.

Church Council: The Church Council is the directing body of the church and consists of the Moderator, Vice Moderator, Treasurer, Treasurer of Endowment Funds, Clerk and the Chairpersons of the following Boards and Committees: Deacons, Trustees, Christian Education, Music, Stewardship, Nominating, Christian Social Concerns and the Ladies Guild.  The Church Council meets once a month, usually on the third Monday.

Board of Deacons: Consisting of 12 members, the Board of Deacons is responsible for the worship, evangelism and spiritual life of the congregation.  They assist the Ministers during services and perform leadership duties in the Ministers' absence.  The Deacons meet once a month, usually on the second Thursday.

The Board of Trustees: Consisting of the Treasurer and 9 additional members, the Board of Trustees manages the property, financial and other business affairs of the church.  They meet once a month, usually on the second Monday.

The Board of Trustees of Endowments: Consisting of the Treasurer of Endowment Funds and 6 additional members, the Board of Trustees of Endowments meets quarterly and is responsible for the management, investment and reinvestment of all endowment funds of the church and administers such funds by the terms under which they have been or may be given to the church.

The Board of Christian Education: Consisting of 9 members, the Board of Christian Education is responsible for the coordination and general supervision of Sunday School and other Christian Education programming and fellowship events for children, youth and adults.  They meet once a month, usually on the 2nd Monday.

The Board of Social Concerns: Consisting of 10 members, the Board of Social Concerns promotes programs of mission, social action and worldwide religious outlook.  All request for benevolences are referred to this board which meets once a month, usually on the third Sunday, directly after the worship service.

The Stewardship Committee: Consisting of 3 members, the Stewardship Committee is responsible for planning and implementing the Annual Stewardship Campaign and for reporting the results to the Board of Trustees.  This committee meets on an as-needed basis.

The Music Committee: Consisting of 6 members, the Music Committee, in cooperation with the Ministers and the Director of Music are responsible for the music program including the chancel choir, youth choir, bell choir, youth bell choir, soloists and special music events.  They oversee the repair and maintenance of the church's musical instruments and purchase supplies for the music program as necessary.  This committee meets on an as-needed basis.

The Nominating Committee: Consisting of 8 members, the Nominating Committee prepares a ballot for the annual meeting of the church.  The committee remains active throughout the year and recommends to the Church Council candidates to fill committee and board vacancies during the year.

The Delegates: The church elects the appropriate number of delegates to the Massachusetts Conference, Hampden Association and the Council of Churches of Greater Springfield.  The delegates are responsible for reporting activities and actions of these organizations to the church.
